Priyanka Chopra is a prolific modern day woman: Miss World 2000, UNICEF Goodwill ambassador, advocate for equality, started her own production company to promote regional heritage. Her recent debut is being casted the lead on abc’s Quantico as an FBI agent. She represents women of color and the confidence she has in her identity empowers the diversity movement. She is an intersectional character being female and a minority. Though, from the show’s trailer, she seems to fall along the fighting fuck toy type as her role normalizes violence. Nevertheless, her character and its’ newfound popularity diversifies media imagery and primes the audience to accept more people of color on shows besides reality tv.
I agree that Chopra has offered new opportunities for characters with intersectionality. I do think, however, that with her roots in Bollywood cinema which is highly gendered, that it might be hard for her to escape the stigma of the fight fuck toy, especially since her career is rooted in misogynistic roles and stereotypes.
