Today, March 24, 2016, North Carolina passed a law to not protect LGBTQ rights. This law passed by legislatures prohibits local governments from passing anti-discrimination laws to protect people of the LGBTQ community. The law protects discrimination against race, religion, color, national origin, and biological sex, but not sexual orientation or gender identity. This law is a huge step backwards for the LGBTQ community and those who support them. In the media, LGBTQ people are misrepresented and symbolically annihilated, which is politically evident in situations like this. Through the media and the way politicians discuss people in the LGBTQ community, it is no wonder that they continue to be discriminated against and left out on non-discrimination laws.
