Given our recent discussions in class, this bit of news speaks to the on-going controversy regarding equal rights for the LGBT community. Last month, the city of Charlotte, NC passed an anti-discrimination ordnance for the legal protection of sexual orientation for citizens of the state. Unfortunately, this past Wednesday, the state Legislature approved a bill that invalidates Charlotte's new legal protections for LGBT individuals. This vote in the House for this bill was 84-25, a strikingly high number. This new state law bars Charlotte or any other city/county in the state from creating new protections, which essentially is the equivalent of no protection whatsoever, as protection does not currently exist in the state. The fact that this bill was passed is very disturbing and horrific and is a huge step in the wrong direction.
