Mark Zuckerberg on Black Lives Matter

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, recently asked his employees to stop the 'malicious' act of crossing out Black Lives Matter slogans in Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California. Zuckerberg believes these acts to be malicious because he has repeatedly asked employees to stop committing such actions. In light of recent events, it is clear that some people have not stopped. Zuckerberg, obviously, was very upset that his employees went against his wishes. But his hurt seems to be bigger than that. He did not like the racism and the mistreatment of this movement that these actions implied. He said "“‘Black lives matter’ doesn’t mean other lives don’t... It’s simply asking that the black community also achieves the justice they deserve.”" (Forbes article "Mark Zuckerberg Calls Out 'Malicious' Facebook Employees For Crossing Out Black Lives Matter Slogans")
I think it is great that Zuckerberg is standing up for this movement. As a white, male billionaire who is 'the elite of the elite' he is using his power to help bring awareness to this movement. His use of media and other outlets is helping bring awareness to this movement which is great. Saying to no to racism and hate actions like this in his work place suggests that he does not stand for actions like this period.

  1. Wow. I had no idea this was going on. As a wealthy, powerful, influential white man, he's setting a good example for his peers by promoting Black Lives Matter in that way.

  2. I think that this is a really important step for Zuckerberg. His privilege allows him to speak out on things, but I also think that sometimes the tech industry chooses to not speak out. I am glad he is doing so!
