Kim Kardashian is Breaking the Internet... Again

Last week Kim Kardashian posted a nude picture of herself on her Instagram account. Due to Instagram privacy policies, black censor bars were used to preserve her modesty. This Instagram became an overnight sensation and ‘broke the internet’; it got many people talking. There were a lot of people who criticized Kim for her actions while others praised her for her ‘bravery’.
Celebs like Amber Rose praised Kim for this post, claiming that it was beautiful of her to show off her mom-of-two body. Amber Rose said that this picture emphasized the struggles of losing baby weight. In Hollywood there is this allusion that losing baby weight can be done in four weeks, but this image of Kim shows that it is a long and hard process. I agree with Amber Rose that it is encouraging for new moms everywhere to understand that they are not alone in their struggles with weight. To see someone like Kim Kardashian struggling too must be a nice reminder that they are not alone. Amber Rose continued that this image emphasized body positivity in a world where there is often body shaming. Kim is embracing her curves and is proud of her body, something she should not apologize for.
On the other side of this argument are people like Chloe Moretz and Pink who believe that this image reinforced the objectification of the female body. Moretz tweeted, “I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies.” To many people this image seemed to reinforce stereotypes, enlist the male gaze, and objectify women. Some people argued that Kim was self-objectifying and set a bad example for young, impressionable girls. Either way this was a very controversial Instagram, one that has many people talking. I agree that this image reinforces the idea that a woman’s value lies in her body; beauty and having the perfect body are messages that are constantly regurgitated in the media. This image seems to reinforce those ideals.

  1. I can see through the lens from both perspectives with this siutation. Yes, celebrities such as Kim Kardashian should have that self-confidence where she should feel proud of her image and success. But, Looking from critics point of view she continuously posted naked pictures of herself making her subject to many stereotypes. From their view as a woman she should be self-objectifying by setting an example for young girls.
