I recently came across a
Pantene commercial from 2013 called ‘labels against women’. Although somewhat old,
the messages and ideas are still very real. The commercial talks about labels
women are faced with in the work force and how discriminatory and sexist these
labels really are. When the label for ‘boss’ is designated to the man, ‘bossy’
is designated to the woman. While men can be persuasive, women are seen as
pushy. Men are labeled as dedicated to their families when they work hard;
women on the other hand are selfish. This label in particular goes back to
ideas like stereotypical gender roles, heteropatriarchy, and gender binary. There
are a couple other label comparisons in the commercial that again rely on
stereotypes and sexism. The workforce has not changed very much since this
commercial was made; men are still the dominant gender and they still earn more
than women.
I thought this add was really well done and captured a
lot of the issues that women face in the work place. Women are still discriminated
against because of their gender, especially in terms of the pay gap between men
and women. There has been a lot of talk about the gap recently. Celebrities
like Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Watson, and Carey Mulligan have started open
dialogues about this issue and are fighting for equal pay. Although this
commercial is dated the issues prevalent in it (labels about women,
stereotypes, inequality) are still very much present.
