The lack of women in Hollywood is obvious. From directors, to actors, to editors men dominate the film industry and receive all of the publicity, media coverage, and praise that comes with their domination. Women struggle to stay relevant in an industry that often discards their work and ignores them. The film industry often chooses to focus on bodies rather than their talent or work when it does choose to see them at all. One woman in Hollywood who worked endlessly to receive respect and recognition is Karyn Kusama. From her debut film in 2000, Girlfight, to her most recent success, The Invitation, Kusama describes her experience in Hollywood "like open heart surgery without the painkillers." The article below details her experiences and the discrimination she has faced because of her gender as she strove to rise to the top.
