Amazon Helps the Homeless

After our conversation in class yesterday about the poor being underrepresented in the media I decide to look to see if I could find any recent articles about the poor.  I found one on CNN Money, which surprised me.

This article talks about Amazon's mission to help homeless people in Seattle.  In 2014, the company bought an old hotel in downtown Seattle.  They are now teaming up with a local charity called Mary's Place to shelter over 200 homeless people - CNN says people will begin to move in on Monday.

This sounds all good except for the fact that Amazon is turning the building into an office space next spring.

It's promising that there are stories about the poor out there.  Yet one thing I want to note is the picture used in this article is an image of a dirty tent surrounded by trash in a dark ally way.  This image stereotypically depicts poor people as dirty.

Coverage is good.  But only if the coverage defies stereotypes and paints the poor in a humane light.
