But when the first official photo was released on Thursday of Johansson as simply "the Major," the backlash was reignited.
While the act of whitewashing is sometimes explained as belonging to the past and written off as extinct, this is a false assumption. Whitewashing is still highly prevalent in modern day film and TV. Many of the controversial castings that insinuate whitewashing are hushed or swept under the rug; however, social media outlets have provided a platform for discussing issues of whitewashing usually excluded from mainstream media. Through using social media outlets such as twitter and Facebook fans of the anime series, Ghost in the Shell, have been able to call attention to the recent incident involving their favorite character. The protagonist pf the series is being brought to life in an upcoming film. The protagonist of the series the film is recreating is a badass Asian woman; the directors cast Scarlett Johansson to play the part. Johansson isn’t Asian. Enraged and offended by this blatant act of whitewashing individuals on social media have called out the film project on many levels and have even posed photos of several prominent, successful Asian actresses, wondering “were they all just too busy?”

  1. White washing is a very controversial subject I think because when u have an actress like Scarlett Johanson, who is in her prime as an actress because of her good looks, she gives movies the opportunity to be more successful at the box office. At the same time she isn't Asian, which makes it very controversial. The argument that comes
in to play a lot is the fact that watching someone of a different race act out a different race's stereotypes shows acting talent and attracts viewers. I just think it should be more people in the movie business given this opportunity other than whites because the movie business is dominated by white people and needs more diversity .
