“Sesame Street” the beloved show most every kid watches as a child has recently added new Afghan Muppet who promotes girls’ rights. Zari, the name of the character, is the first Afghan Muppet in the show’s history. Zari – whose name means “shimmering” in the Dari and Pashto languages – has been tasked with a mission to promote female empowerment. Knowing that TV is a huge storytelling force and that it shapes the way individuals, especially children, think about their surroundings including other cultures and individuals it is extremely exciting to know that the media children are ingesting is becoming more diverse. Often a main source of information about the world, TV shows for children have huge impacts on their young and malleable minds, Perhaps the addition of an Afghan character and the push for a more diverse cast will make Sesame Street a culturally inclusive educating force for young children.
