Real Women, Real Talk

I recently watched a TJ Maxx commercial titled “real inspiration from real women” and thought it was really well done. Rather than using models, TJ Maxx used real women. And not only did they use real women, but they used a diverse group of women. There were a lot of groups represented in this commercial that usually are not seen on TV. In particular, disabled women. A girl with special needs was featured in the commercial blowing bubbles and talking to the camera. Last week we talked about how much discrimination and symbolic annihilation there is of people with disabilities in TV shows, movies etc. It was refreshing to see this group represented. There was also a great deal of diversity in this commercial. Women who were fuller, skinny, young, old, white, black, Chinese etc. were all represented in this commercial. Seeing so much diversity in one commercial is rare, and I think TJ Maxx did a great job. It was also really nice having real women talk about their wants and needs rather than models talking about it. This added an intersectional perspective to the commercial. Overall, well done!
