Viola Davis

Last Saturday, actress Viola Davis spoke at in Wait Chapel. She provided the audience with the story of her life and how she got to where she is. It was very relevant to what we have discussed in class, as her story was filled with many intersectional plot lines. Growing up, dealing with the combination of race, class, and gender was her biggest struggle. She pointed out how each one effected her life and how it made her who she was today, and also showed the intersectionality of all three. Her story was relevant to many recent conversations regarding race and gender in Hollywood. Her story confirmed everything we have been hearing on the outside. The discussion brought intense life to colorism, racism, and sexism in Hollywood. I believe Viola Davis coming to Wake was very effective, as she allowed students to open their eyes to current issues and really think about racism, sexism, and diversity.
