MHP speaks out on leaving MSNBC

Last month, professor, author and political commentator Melissa Harris-Perry had a very public breakup with MSNBC after four years of hosting her eponymous weekend show. Reaction extended to the floor of the House, where Illinois Congress member Luis Gutierrez stood next to a sign of the NBC peacock with the hashtag #NBCSoWhite and suggested the network has a racial diversity problem. But even though her show is now off the air, Melissa is still sparking critical conversations. She explained how the network tried changing the name from MHP to Place for Politics, which she felt they were trying to steer her brand in a whole different direction. The final straw was that they tried to invite her back to the show, not to host but to anchor. On her last show she explained how she wanted to address Beyonce's "Formation" video but her senior producer told her that she couldn't cover that specific topic because it targeted racial and feminist issues. MHP felt she no longer had any control over her show which her freedom was slowly diminishing.

  1. In my opinion I am glad that MHP decided to leave MSNBC for what she believed. I think too many times our voices are taken from us by the white media gatekeepers; and I appreciate her taking a stance.
