Chris Brown tweets about Kehlani's Suicide
I have followed the artist Kehlani for the past few years. Growing up in the Bay Area, I was exposed to some artists earlier than others. I have absolutely loved everything Kehlani has come out with, as she is very real and raw. She brings in her experience as a woman of color growing up in Oakland, and facing various forms of oppression. I was very saddened to see the hashtag #PrayforKehlani trending on Tuesday. When I clicked and saw she had tried to commit suicide, my heart was heavy for her. On social media, particularly twitter and instagram, people were very quick to jump and call her names like "whore" for supposedly cheating on her boyfriend. One of the people who was most harsh against the artist was Chris Brown, the ever so polarizing hip-hop/RnB singer. He says "there is no attempting suicide. Stop flexing for the gram. Doing shit for sympathy so them comments under your pic don't look so bad." The worst part about Brown's tweet was the 52k retweets it garnered. None of us know the full story, so we should not be quick to hop on the judgment train. Brown's subtle misogynistic tone is shown in his last line, where he claims she faked suicide because she wanted the comments on her photo to be supportive not negative. In this dark point of her life, I think the media and other important figures need to respect Kehlani's privacy and not over hype the situation. Let her heal in peace!
