Mississippi Gov. Permits LGBT Discrimination

On Tuesday, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed a law permitting LGBT discrimination in the state. The law permits employers to cite religion in establishing policies on dress code, grooming, bathroom and locker access in places of work. This law additionally allows people with religious objections to deny wedding services to same-sex couples in the state of Mississippi. According to the governor, he signed the law with the intent to "protect sincerely held religious beliefs and moral convictions of individuals, organizations and private associations from discriminatory action by state government." This newly instated Mississippi law goes above and beyond the extreme discrimination presented in the recent North Carolina state law barring transgender people from choosing bathrooms consistent with their gender identity. This is an extremely sad day not only for the state of Mississippi but for our entire nation. The fact that it is 2016 and these laws are continuously being passed is ridiculous. These laws appear to be developing a pattern throughout the nation and are only becoming more and more discriminatory and offensive. This is extremely devastating and disappointing for our nation as a whole.

  1. I feel that in some ways our society is moving back, particularly in terms of LGBTQ rights! This makes me so sad, and I hope that law makers realize that sexual identity does not impact "religious" freedom.
