Amy Schumer speaks out against Glamour

With an attempt to appeal to the issue of body image in the media, Glamour magazine recently published a "plus-size issue," featuring and applauding a  variety of female "plus-size" celebrities. It has been brought to the attention of the media that Glamour published a list of "Women Who Inspire Us" within this issue, listing Amy Schumer's name without consent. Schumer's name was listed along with Adele and Ashley Graham, although had not been contacted nor had been aware of the title. Just yesterday, Schumer utilized Instagram as a source of outreach for her followers and fans to criticize the work of Glamour. She first posted a snapshot of the article title, including her name listed as a plus-size woman who is considered an inspiration. Schumer utilized Instagram as a way to publicly call out Glamour magazine first for listing her name, when she later states that she is actually somewhere between a size 6-8. Not that this information really matters--it is besides the point. The point here is that the media often twists words and stories in order to create more of a buzz and essentially stir the pot. I personally applaud Schumer for taking the liberty to stand for herself and not let them get away with publishing this, particularly without her consent. She then proceeded to post a second Instagram photo, featuring a video of herself running down the beach in a bikini. She captions this follow-up post: "Bottom line seems to be that these labels are unnecessary and reserved for women #muchlove." After hearing about this, I admire the fact that she did not let the media get away with this one and stood up for herself. The only way that we as a society are going to steer away from the negative portrayal of body image in the media is if we start acting on it, and I found this to be a perfect example of doing so.
