Colorism is the Latino Community

In class this past Tuesday we created a list of names on the board, of famous Latinos in the media that immediately popped into our minds. However, we never really delved deeper into the list; unpacking the obvious trend that was apparent looking at the list. Being that majority of the list was of the lighter skin complexion. People that resembled the dominant culture. This phenomenon is known as colorism which started in the African-American community by the dominant culture as a way of self-oppression in minority communities. But enough of the history lesson. I just thought that the list was funny, because it shows who the media gatekeepers are, and who is in control over the mass media. Similarly, it shows the symbolic annihilation of Afro-Latinos. Which is sad, because it plants a seed into the minds of the people who are watching these televisions programs that every Latino is of the fairer skin tone which is not true.
