Whitewashing: Scarlett playing a Japanese character

The Hollywood Reporter highlighted this story on their page to point out the whitewashing of the upcoming film Ghost in the Shell. There are arguments on both sides to either justify or dismiss the directors casting choice. Advocates say that it is fair and accurate as the manga portrays a white female. The writer adds that it was never the intention for the character to be Japanese. Challengers say that this would have been a chance for Japanese property to be seen around the world. Whitewashing is a trend in Hollywood especially for political economy in the West.

  1. whitewashing is a really big problem in the media industry. Not only does it contribute to symbolic annihilation, but it keeps the current power structures in place. It is a really harmful practice that keeps many races in the dark and does not allow for people to portray themselves.

  2. Wow this is upsetting. Whitewashing has been going on for so long, and it is really detrimental to mass media. Whitewashing also illuminates this sense of white privilege, because white people are allowed to play any character they want. I don't think ScarJo should be playing this part, because it is not a true and accurate representation.
