Trump Thinks Harriet Tubman shouldnt be on the $20 dollar
Yesterday the National Treasury decided to print all new $20 dollar with Harriet Tubman on them instead of President Andrew Jackson. Donald Trump had some thoughts on it this saying "pure political correctness," ""I think Harriet Tubman is fantastic, but I would love to leave Andrew Jackson or see if we can maybe come up with another denomination."Trump suggested -- as Ben Carson also has -- that Tubman be put on the $2 bill, which is no longer printed. If the $2 bill is no longer printed my question is why would trump and Carson make these comments. Do they feel that Tubman is not as important as Andrew Jackson to American history, is it because she helped free slaves and they see this as a rebellious act? What do you think the motives for this specific comment was?

Trump is the love child of the 3 pillars of white supremacy and heteropatriarchy. The $2 suggestion could be played out both ways. One is that it's considered a special edition bill in our currency, valued because of its rarity, yet it the other side of the coin is that it further drives the symbolic annihilation and lack of intersectionality of women of color on dollar bills. It's not questionable that Trump has a narrow perspective of intercultural relations which will burden the US in building international credibility and managing affairs.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to give Trump the benefit of the doubt on this one that he did not know that the two dollar bill was printed. Ben Carson also stated that he would like to see her on the two dollar bill and he is African-American so saying there was racial intent by putting her on a bill "that is no longer printed" is far fetched because Trump did say that he thinks Harriet Tubman is fantastic and important part of our history. I think his issue was having to take someone off of a bill who also has done things to benefit our country. I don't believe he thinks what Andrew Jackson has done for the country is anymore than what Harriet Tubman has done. Jackson had just been on the bill for so long in history that it is kind a rough to see someone stripped from the bill. Personally I would like to keep Andrew Jackson on the $20 Bill and put Harry Tubman on the five dollar bill since Abraham Lincoln is on both the five dollar bill and the penny and is represented twice in our currency. Whether you take the words "political correctness" with a negative or positive connotation this was in fact an act of political correctness. It eliminates the symbolic annihilation of white man on our currency and purposely gives woman as well as African-Americans representation as well which is good to see.
