Miss Peru Universe

Mirella Paz Baylon, 19, is one of ten women competing for the title of Miss Peru Universe. What makes her so special and news worthy? She happens to be the first ever plus-size model to compete for a major beauty queen title. After enduring years of bullying for her weight and size, she is defying the people who put her down. She said, “People called me fat and said I was a hog at university”; but rather than letting these people get to her, she is letting her beauty shine. Mirella has made it through the first round of 31 contestants in the 2016 Miss Peru Universe and will compete for the title this month. This is a very historic moment for beauty pageants and is hopefully setting a tone for change.
I always find it encouraging to see people like Baylon finally getting treated with respect and dignity. For so long, social media has resorted to ‘fat shaming’ people who weren’t a size 6 or below. It is time that beauty standards change and allow for people to feel beautiful in their own skin. Whether someone is a size 10 or a size 2, everyone deserves to feel beautiful. We as a country need to make women feel better about themselves and promote body-image positivity rather than fat shaming. Hopefully, people like Baylon can lead the way.

  1. This is awesome! I hope that in a short time, there will be more than just one plus-size woman participating and having success in competitions like these.

  2. Wow! It's so encouraging to see acceptance, respect, and appreciation for different body types. There are so many different types of bodies and they're all beautiful, it doesn't make sense to only appreciate those who are slender. All bodies deserve to be appreciated.
