Amy Schumer: Plus Size or Nah?

Amy Schumer came out this week frustrated with Glamour labeling her "plus size" in the latest issue. Her argument was that labeling size 6-8 plus size says something about how we label women in general, that calling a size 6 "plus size" perpetuates the idea that if women aren't size 2, they're too big, and take up too much space. Not everyone thought that her argument was one that was pro-women however. Some found her remarks insulting to plus-size women, that by saying that she wasn't plus size, and coming out against the label, that she was saying that being plus sized was bad.
Now, I happen to see Amy's point. Though being plus-sized is in no way negative, bodies are beautiful, but the labeling of size 6 as plus-sized means that one would have to be under that to conform to conventional skinny beauty standards. Though I think both sides miss the point, it's not the labeling that is the problem, rather the way we measure ourselves by those standards. Saying that one is "plus" sized to being with is saying that they are a regular size, and then some. Never letting their weight just be normal, but always more than normal. Women's bodies are constantly regulated by the clothing industry, and the way sizing are made. But focusing on this comment misses the bigger point.

  1. I completely agree with your statement. I don't think Amy is being disrespectful to plus size women at all! She's a size 6, that's simply not plus sized. That's like putting me in a magazine issue for blue eyed people when I have brown eyes, it's just not true. Further, saying size 6 is plus sized promotes AWFUL body image for women.
