Rapper DMX found unconscious: CNN vs. Fox News

February 10, rapper, DMX was found unconscious in his hotel parking lot.  As a celebrity, who has been in and out of the spotlight for years, the ups and downs of his personal life have been on display through the media. This most recent incident was reported via a number of media outlets.  When researching the story, I noticed an obvious difference in portrayal between CNN and  Fox News(published by New York Post) reports.

From the headlines, to the photos, to the actual content of the articles, framing of the whole story is evident.  CNN reports the rapper being found unconscious, possibly due to an asthma attack, while mentioning the fact that he had shortcomings and highlighting some of DMX's successes as a rapper. The possibility of drug use was not mentioned once in the article.  On the other hand, Fox News frames DMX as a drug addicted, non child support paying, criminal, who was suffering from a drug overdose.  Not only does the article headline state, "Report: DMX almost dies from drug overdose", but immediately following is a mug shot of the rapper from 2013.

CNN, owned by Turner Broadcasting System, and Fox News, owned by Fox Entertainment Group, often display opposing views in their reporting.  Media corporations use the networks that they own to present their views of the world.  Society has an expectation of minority men, especially Blacks, to be confrontational, threatening, trouble-makers.  This stereotype is constantly portrayed in the media, and as these articles show, the same story can be presented in a more factual, non-biased manner.
