Given the fact that the #OscarSoWhite hashtag and controversy spread like wildfire in the media over the past few weeks, this recent news release regarding the Berlin Film Festival has the potential to do the same. Meryl Streep has been selected to speak out in support of diversity at the Berlin International Film Festival. Despite this, Streep made a comment in passing that seems to be receiving all of the attention, by viewers and the media. Referring to the fact that the jury panel for the festival consists of (seven) all-white judges, Streep comments saying that "we're all Africans really." Streep proceeded to make this remark following a question posed by an Egyptian reporter, asking who would serve as the jury president. The full and direct comment by Streep stated, "there is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture, and after all we're all from Africa originally. Berliners, we're all Africans really." While Streep did in fact praise the representation of women on the panel, her awkward and rather inappropriate answer to the question above comes at time where diversity is an extremely touchy subject in Hollywood media. News reporters and media sites are raising the idea that this has the potential to lead to another protest/movement against the festival and develop a hashtag that will continue to stir the issue.
