If men in the media are held to the standard of the “sanitized
body” then the women are held to a standard ten times more particular. The sanitized
body for men is essentially a body that is extremely well kept. A sanitized
body has no back hair, no unkempt facial hair; it is lean and strong. This of
course is an unrealistic standard for men, but at least they’re still allowed
to grow leg and armpit hair during a zombie apocalypse. Take The Walking Dead for example, the women
on the show are scraping by, fighting tooth and nail to survive each day, but
somehow despite their situation they manage to shave and wax and shampoo their hair.
They remain altogether ladylike because, while men should keep their body hair
in check, women aren’t supposed to grow it at all.
