"Multifaceted,
complex, full of contradictions and black as hell."
This is how Alicia
Garza, Black Lives Matter co-founder described Beyoncé she appeared in
"Formation,". A lot of people have said that this music video has
brought this social justice movement to a new level of awareness but also
controversy now that she has built her new single around it.
Garza wrote for
Rolling Stones weighing the pros and cons of having Beyoncé become a
"bold-faced" member of the movement. Though Garza agrees with some of
the criticisms leveled at Beyoncé those regarding her championing of
capitalism, Gaze states, "Let's be clear, it’s not just 'Formation' in
which she identifies herself as part of the movement. It's also in her
practice, from her monetary support for the movement for black lives, to her
contributions to her own community by building housing for poor people in
Houston, to her attendance at protests and demonstrations centered around the
same message we saw in her video: the demand to stop killing us."
She applauded Beyoncé
because "unlike some celebrities she is courageous enough not just to
reference a growing movement, but to proudly place herself within it." She
concluded by saying, "Go head, Queen Bey, welcome to the movement."
Even though there are controversies surrounding her late video Beyoncé is
putting the message forward about BLM and she isn't afraid to push in people's
faces.
