Ronda Rousey Body Paint Cover

After discussing body image this past week in class, I found this news article to be quite interesting. Sports Illustrated announced last Saturday that Ronda Rousey would be featured on one of the three covers wearing nothing but body paint. For the first time, Sports Illustrated is releasing three different models on three separate covers. Ronda Rousey's cover release has been quite controversial in the media regarding the fact that she is not wearing a single item of clothing. The news has contributed to tension in the media and I believe that this relates directly with what we have discussed in class and the various opinions that one may take regarding body image and promotion in the media. Some people seem to believe that this movement is empowering and expresses true beauty, while others strongly believe that this is even more objectifying. In addition to this release, Sports Illustrated is featuring the very first plus size model on one of the three covers. This particular release has led me to believe that they are taking a step in the right direction in regard to body image and self esteem for women. The body paint cover remains very controversial and I am interested to see more of the breakthroughs in the media.
