Gender Roles in Greek Life

Recently, greek life has been shown in a negative light in the media, so I am intrigued whenever I see articles on greek life while scrolling through social media. One of my Facebook friends posted an article called, "Why frat bros can throw parties but sorority sisters aren't allowed to," from the Washington Post. The article navigates the differences between sororities and fraternities through the upcoming sequel to Seth Rogen's movie, "Neighbors." The differences between sororities and fraternities are interesting because they represent strong gender differences between two seemingly similar organizations. The article touches on an important issue -- because fraternities are allowed to throw parties, they objectify sororities by exclaiming that some are "hotter" or more "prude" than others. In this sense, are given more power than women because they are allowed to throw parties and consume alcohol while women are not. This Washington Post article explores other differences that occur with sororities not being allowed to throw parties. By giving men the control over the social scene in college, we are again putting them in a position of power over women. On the other hand, the article explores the idea that sororities are better off because parties with alcohol are very expensive.
