The Huffington Post posted this article as a part of their "Black Future Month" feature. It clearly talks about the complicatedness of living life at the intersection of many different identities (especially those that are not valued). This article talks about the meaning of transness within blackness, and how those within that community should strive for solidarity and safety, but also there is a call to those who are white to make efforts to combat racism due to the fact they created, and benefit from, white supremacy.
Cherno Biko, the author of the article, lives her life in the insection of blackness and transness, and she explains that this specific intersection is especially dangerous (with 25 black trans women murdered in 2015) and how these targeting killings liken the lynchings that happened in the 19th and 20th centuries.
It is important when we look at the media that even when we are looking to resistant groups that there are intersections and inequalities within them. This article encourages us to ask the questions about those that are absent from the media, like trans people. And when trans people are covered they are often migendered, described as abject (think back to hegemony and how elites control the story), and portrayed as villains (even when black trans women are the victims of violence, i.e. "they deserved it").
Keep hearts and eyes open, friends! #blacklivesmatter #blacktranslivesmatter
