"Strong is Beautiful | Pantene Dad-Do" Ad

A video I've seen throughout my Facebook feed today, due to its relevance to Wake Forest and overall cute factor, is the "Strong is Beautiful" Pantene commercial. The advertisement shows NFL players doing their daughters' hair, while reinforcing research on the importance of father-daughter relationships done by WFU professor Linda Nielson, whose research inspired this video.

One controversial issue the video raises is whether the advertisement is giving too much credit to men/fathers. I personally do strongly believe in the power of the relationship between father and daughter, but I don't believe that is the only way to create a strong woman. Girls become strong through relationships with their fathers, or their mothers, or anyone else who plays an influential role in their life. But the overall message of this advertisement is that strong is beautiful, which teaches girls who see this advertisement that their looks aren't everything.

In the articles we read for class, "Cultivation Beauty" and "Growing up with Television," we learned and discussed the great influence that television has on kids from a young age. By sending a message of power, rather than looks, the advertisers are aiming to change the message they are sending to their audience.
