Emma Watson Feminist Book Club

Emma Watson is a prominent actress, known for her role in Harry Potter, and some buzz has stirred up around the recent start up of her new feminist book club. In my opinion the actual book club itself is an example of what we recently talked about in class about the waves of the feminist movement. In particular the wave I am referring to is the second wave of feminism. This wave was known for and highlighted the white, heterosexual, middle and upper class women's. The way the media is covering the book club reminds me of this because they only highlight the white celebrities that are joining the book. For example the picture that is seen above is of an article by Hayley Spencer of InStyle talking of actress and model Karlie Kloss joining the book club. In looking into this i did not see one article about any person of color joining the book club.

  1. This is a great reference to second wave feminism. Also, based on the articles I found myself reading on this topic, I didn't notice a focus on male celebrities, or really males at all, being apart of this book club. There are countless male feminists in the world and I am confident several members of this book club are male, so why is this not being acknowledged? The lack of male representation in the media within the feminist movement further supports the common misconception that feminists must be female.
