So recently I was browsing through my social media feeds (Facebook, and Twitter) and I began to see an unfamiliar hashtag, #BoycottBeyonce. When I saw this I immediately clicked on the hashtag to do some more research around the hashtag. Come to find out, it was a form of "clapback" against Beyonce's Super Bowl performance. Reading further into it, I began to see critics saying that Beyonce's performance was a protest against the police force. Really?! These are people on twitter, and even cable news networks such as Fox News (big surprise) and CNN. Saying that she was "race baiting," and bringing "hate speech and racism to the Super Bowl." Ensuing there have many protest against the singer's performance in cities such as New York, behind their own mayor, Rudy Guliani, and outside of the NFL headquarters. In my opinion, the people who are saying these ignorant comments are whats wrong with America. And why there is such a big divide. Anyone can see that Beyonce used her platform to not only pay homage to black history month and the 50th anniversary of the black panther party, but to draw attention to the #blacklivesmatter movement; while similarly demonstrating that black is beautiful and powerful. She made people pay attention, and take notice to the recent events that have been happening to the black community at the most watched event of the year. So I applaud Beyonce for using her platform to further along the social justice efforts started by those in these minority communities. The people that have negative things to say need to WAKE up, and stop being ignorant to the issues playing out right in front of us. Especially the mass media, knowing that these cable networks are where most people go to receive their information.
I really liked what Beyonce's performance at the super bowl and think that the negative media coverage of it is unfair. People are criticizing her for her outfit choice, her lyrics, her dancing etc. which I do not this is right. Beyonce did not do anything radical and did not proclaim herself to be a full on activist. What she was doing was bringing attention to certain things like: #blacklives matter, black history month, and the 50th anniversary of the black panther party. She was encouraging people to think about stereotypes and current belief systems. Like I said, she did not do anything violent, obscene or ridiculous to get people thinking. She sparked conversations and nothing more. This backlash is uncalled for.
