The
iconic Barbie doll has finally transformed into a realistic, 21st
century women. The best selling doll is now available in three body types:
tall, petite, and curvy. Because of criticism over Barbie’s impossible proportions
in the past, Mattel has remade the iconic doll in three different body types.
The new body types follow the additions of different hair colors, hair
textures, and skin color in 2015. These new inclusions make Barbie more
universal and attainable to young girls. Rather than promoting impossible body
portions or unrealistic beauty ideals, Barbie 2.0 is finally taking into
account different races, different hair colors, and different body types. It is
a new doll that can promote body confidence and beauty. This doll no longer holds
girls to impossible standards, but has the ability to make girls feel beautiful
about their unique characteristics. Girls can finally play with a doll ‘that is
like them’ and can maybe help them feel confident about themselves. This is a
step in promoting the message of beauty in all shapes, sizes, and races to
young girls.
Because women are portrayed in such a way in the media, this new barbie doll may have the ability to redefine beauty stereotypes. Most women in movies, TV shows etc. are skinny, fit, health conscious, blonde, and white. This doll may be able to combat these stereotypes and unrealistic expectations that are harmful for young girls. Media plays a large role in conditioning girls about the way to act, the way to eat, the way to look, but is all based on something that is unattainable. This doll promotes reality and real girls.
