Sports Illustrated Magazine started their swimsuit edition in 1964 where Babbette March graced the cover. Looking at the photo you can see that she wasn't the ideal size model, where back in the 60's the standards were different. By looking at the photo the model was probably a size 9-12 as to compared to the today's society the standard model is a size 2. The swimsuit edition usually publishes women who are thin, white, and rich through the years of Sports Illustrated tradition. Tyra Banks broke these standards by becoming the first African-American women to grace the cover alone. Also as you can see she wasn't a size 2 in the photo. Tyra Banks broke society's norms when she was awarded the cover because models felt as if they had to be a certain weight, race, or body shape.
They have given girls unrealistc standards to live up to. These woman have to go through crazy diets and workouts to achieve their bodies and sometimes their bodies are edited to look even smaller. Its a shame that these unrealistic expectations surround our society.
