Kendall Jenner as new face for Mango's Tribal collection
Model Kendall Jenner was recently selected as the new face of Mango, a European women's clothing store. The name of the spring 2016 campaign is "Tribal Spirit," the first of four separate themes to make up the entirety of the clothing campaign. Jenner will be featured as the face of the collection and will model the collection inspired by the African Savannah, including a tribal print dress and a leather fringe minidress. While many of Jenner's fans were thrilled to receive this news, several critics have taken to social media to express their negative opinions regarding the fact that Mango selected a white girl to represent the collection. Many social media users have critiqued the release of the collection preview, calling it a classic case of cultural appropriation and even racist. Mango described the collection as "an ethnic inspired trend with an abundance of accessories to produce outfits of a tribal and free-spirited influence." Amber Love predicted that women of color in the fashion industry would not be impressed, and she was absolutely correct. The posting of tweets by various social media activists stirred many debates on Twitter pertaining to the issue of racism at hand, with the selection of a white girl rather than a black girl as a face of the collection inspired by the African Savannah. The release of Jenner as the face of the campaign has been very controversial due to the social media outbreaks against Mango, claiming that the fashion brand is unrealistic and racist. Many activists against the campaign are indicating the fact that Mango is simply utilizing Jenner and her status as a celebrity to generate a greater market and customer base to accumulate a profit in the long-run. According to critics, the fashion brand is not taking into account the original intent of the line, and many are questioning why the brand did not appoint an African model to star in a campaign inspired by Africa.

I hadn't heard about this until now, so thank you for pointing it out. In a time when diversity is lacking in so many areas, it is vital that companies like Mango take strides in trying to fix this. With a fashion campaign celebrating Africa, they had the perfect opportunity to represent African women and true tribal beauty. It is a shame they are falling into the trend of cultural appropriation, and they should realize and try to fix their choice.
