Blog Post #1 – http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2015/sep/18/emmy-awards-face-the-future-as-television-becomes-more-diverse Are the upcoming Emmy’s reflective of a more
diverse world of television?
A
recent article published by The Guardian
earlier this week addressed the topic of the upcoming Emmy’s, and discussed the
issue of a serious lack of female employees in television, specifically women
of color. The article argues that this
year could be a game changer for women of color in television. According to recent reports in regards to the
Emmy’s:
“To date, no woman of colour has ever won the
outstanding lead actress in a drama award. Yet this year, both How to
Get Away with Murder’s Viola Davis and Empire’s Taraji P Henson stand a strong chance of taking home
the award over fellow nominees Claire
Danes (for Homeland), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Mad Men (Elizabeth Moss) and Robin Wright (House of
Cards).
Not only are women underrepresented on the screen, but
they are also outnumbered by men behind the scenes as well. In order to begin to reconcile these issues
regarding the role of women in television and media, both on and off the
screen, there must be action taken. This
can begin by providing women with more opportunities to be hired in this work
place, as stated in the article by WMC president Julie Burton:
“The
bottom line: if more women were hired as writers, directors, editors,
producers, and especially as
creators and executive producers, the talent pool for nominations would be more reflective of the overall
population and audience – more than half of which
are women.”
If we are able to get women into positions of
creativity, innovation, and power, then changes can subsequently be made to
foster more opportunity for women to get involved in such fields where men
previously dominated.
