It is a known thing in Hollywood that older women have a very difficult time being cast in movies/TV shows, and when they are cast their looks are often scrutinized. No one says anything about older men in Hollywood, who are still cast among hot, young women in which no one questions why they would be with such an older, unattractive fellow.
When older women are put on display in Hollywood, their looks are constantly critiqued. For example, when Carrie Fischer reprised her role of Princess Leia, all anyone could talk about was how much she had aged. Did anyone talk about the way Luke Skywalker was looking? No. (Even though he looked completely different and older too!!)
More recently, the show The X Files came back on television with the original cast. The two main characters are a man and a woman. Naturally, both of them have aged since the start of the show. However, only one of them was scrutinized for their changing looks: the female.
An article was written in the Daily Mail discussing if Gillian Anderson had had plastic surgery/ botox to change her appearance and keep her appearance young. Would it be so surprising if she just looked good for her age? Apparently yes, this is surprising.
As the Cultivation & Beauty reading said, "Media messages emphasize the importance of physical appearance, especially towards women" and that women are expected to look "overwhelmingly young and thin". With this being a widespread belief, it is no surprise that Anderson's looks were a topic of conversation. Her physical appearance is what most viewers focus on because of what media messages have taught us.
