Cam Newton has been in the spotlight this entire NFL season. Not just because his team, the Carolina Panthers, are 15-1, but because of personal criticism. It started out with his dance moves and now that he is starring in the Super Bowl this Sunday, reporters are criticizing his abilities as a black quarterback. He said earlier this week that he has a lot of pressure on him because he is a black quarterback but a recent study shows that 62% of fans believe Cam faces criticism because of his play, not because of his race. What does the class think about this? Do you have a problem with his style of play or do you like him as a quarterback?

  2. think that the media has a hard time grasping the fact that Cam Newton is succeeding, making an impact, and also having fun while playing the game. Throughout the history of sports and especially the game of football, celebrations are a large part of the game.I think the media is mixing up Cam's passion, love and enjoyment of the game with being egocentric.I also think that Cam should be treated and talked about just like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. The plays that they make are what matters not how they celebrate.

  3. I think there are several issues of race and media at work with Cam Newton. The quarterback is often the media figurehead of a team. When you imagine a team in your mind, often the face of the quarterback comes along with it. And, usually, the quarterback is white. I think many of the people who have an issue with Cam Newton have subliminal racism, or the third party effect. The kind of people who say "I'm not a racist. That's other people," but they shame Cam Newton for a celebration dance and say a different quarterback "just had a bad game" when he throws interceptions out the window. They have an underlying prejudice for Cam that they themselves may not understand.

Cam Newton is a quarterback. He's obviously a pretty good one, because his team is going to the Super Bowl. He is energetic, full of life, and makes a positive contribution to his team, his community, the sport of football, and the media. I hope that the people who have a problem with Cam are few, because everyone I've ever spoken to about Cam Newton speaks about his dedication on the field, and how he's always smiling.

  4. I believe its because his style of play on the field. We have seen black quarterbacks have success, like Michael Vick and Warren Moon and Russell Wilson. I absolutely agree with Dez. Nobody has more fun playing football than Cam Newton. His passion and enthusiasm are very fun to watch as a viewer. People are mixing this up with him being egocentric. To me, if you work everyday of your life to get to the level Cam Newton is at, he should have the right to dance a little, especially when his team is doing as well as it is. I think Cam Newton was right when he said the other week that people aren't used to his style of play at QB. Wide Receivers and running backs have been seen to dance, but never has a QB done what Cam Newton has done outside of just taking snaps and throwing passes. He also gives a football to a child everytime he scores a touchdown so his play on the field and his enthusiasm is very inspiring not only to me, but to many kids around the country.

  5. Throughout NFL history an athletic quarterback, like Cam Newton, has been associated with being a quarterback of color. It hasn't been until recent years that we have seen athleticism evolve in the quarterback position. The sports media has made the connotation that if you are a black quarterback or a black player period you play in a more flashy, flamboyant manner. With this you add the connotation that the black quarterback is a more athletic, running style of play quarterback i do not think the study proves anything because most people contribute Cam Newton's style of play with his race, being an African American.
