Brooklyn: Proof That Women Can Have it All
Saoirse Ronan is no stranger to the big screen. A two time Academy Award nominee, Ronan exudes grace and class in each of her roles. Her most recent film, Brooklyn, is marketed as a love story between Irish immigrant, Ellis (Ronan) and a fast-talking Italian, Brooklyn bred, Tony (Emory Cohen). The real accomplishment of the film, however, remains in the marriage of Ellis' professional aspirations in conjunction with her budding romance. Often, films center on the ingenue's desire to get married, not get a career. Ellis, however, commits to her studies and quickly becomes an accountant. Brooklyn proves that a female can achieve their dreams while maintaining a healthy romantic relationship. Additionally throughout the film Ellis' aspirations are supported by Tony, proving that portrayals of women in film can be multifaceted and defy traditional heteronormative beliefs.
