Britain issues warning to LGBT community

On Tuesday British foreign office released a statement to citizens of the LGBT community about traveling through the U.S.. I thought this was great that Britain is looking out for the people of their country. Reading this made me question are foreigners supposed to know these things or not? I would be curious to see if any of this issues occur with people just visiting the U.S. and how they laws with restroom use is different in their country. I think that by Britain taking these actions will help other countries start to inform there citizens so they are aware when they visit.

Trump Thinks Harriet Tubman shouldnt be on the $20 dollar

Yesterday the National Treasury decided to print all new $20 dollar with Harriet Tubman on them instead of President Andrew Jackson. Donald Trump had some thoughts on it this saying "pure political correctness," ""I think Harriet Tubman is fantastic, but I would love to leave Andrew Jackson or see if we can maybe come up with another denomination."Trump suggested -- as Ben Carson also has -- that Tubman be put on the $2 bill, which is no longer printed. If the $2 bill is no longer printed my question is why would trump and Carson make these comments. Do they feel that Tubman is not as important as Andrew Jackson to American history, is it because she helped free slaves and they see this as a rebellious act? What do you think the motives for this specific comment was?

Pro wrestler Chyna just passed away recently, this is a huge blow to people because she was one of the first women wrestlers to define gender roles and become one of the best pro wrestlers. She defined multiple stereotypes that women cannot wrestle and continued to pave the way for other women wrestlers. 

Curt Schilling Fired Over Controversial Photo

ESPN announced on Wednesday that they had terminated the contract of Curt Schilling. Schilling, a former pitcher for the Red Sox and now an analyst, had tweeted a photo mocking transgender people. The photo insinuated that transgender women were actually just men who were dressed as women. This is not Schilling's first time saying something offensive. I think ESPN made the right move because of the platform he has and the way that his "meme" further marginalizes already oppressed identities. What Schilling does not grasp at is that those who identify as transgender aren't entering a restroom to abuse/molest little girls. They are entering that restroom because they identify as a woman, and they deserve to use the woman's bathroom.

The Greatness that Was Prince

Today, the world lost an incredible artist and icon. At 57 years old, the musician known as Prince has passed away. While it is a tremendous loss for the music world and fans, it is also a loss for our modern day culture. It can be argued that what David Bowie was for white kids, Prince was for black kids. He broke many stereotypes and gendered norms, and embraced who he was to the fullest extent. He changed the way that many people think about gender and race, and refused to allow a binary to define how he acted or dressed. Particularly in a world that is run by heteronormativity and gender, his life was iconic and important to break down those barriers. His music was also embracing of these values, and he promoted a life that was made up of many identities. The world will miss you Prince, and the life and light that you brought.

Food Stereotypes

After working on our final project and using the stereotype of African-Americans liking fried chicken, this video was perfect. This is Steve Harvey, a black tv show host, eating all different kinds of fried food. He talks about fried chicken, collard greens, and mac and cheese. This is just another confirmation of this stereotype, but people need to remember that this does not mean that all African-Americans like fried chicken, collard greens, and mac and cheese.

"Controversial topic these days. Yesterday, a federal appeals court ruled that public schools need to let transgender kids use the bathrooms that match their gender identity. This case has to do with a Virginia high school student who was born female but identifies as a male. School officials were totally OK with letting him use the boys bathroom. The school board not so much. A lower court ruled in favor of the school board - and the boy says he ended up just avoiding bathrooms altogether. Painful on many levels. Yesterday’s decision reverses that ruling, saying it’s sex ualdiscrimination to keep him from using the bathroom he identifies with. Meanwhile, lots of people are wondering what this means for a controversial new North Carolina bathroom law. This law keeps all trans people from going to the public bathroom they identify with - including in public schools. And since this appeals court has legal authority over NC, that part of the law could now be canceled out. Stand by."
