Chris Rocks Oscar Performance was one of the best of all time. He constantly showed his support to Black actors that were not nominated throughout the show and made funny, but true jokes all throughout the ceremony. The #Oscarssowhite hash tag began when no black actors were nominated for any awards and I think Chris Rock handled that situation very well. many people that wrote on the Oscars applauded his performance and called it a much needed "wake up call".      

Chad Ocho Cinco "who's Paying for dinner"

Chad Johnson is a retired NFL football player who was seen on video saying when he takes a girl out to dinner, he will play them in a game of Uno to see who pays the bill. this caused a uproar in the media by people calling him a savage and not a gentlemen but in my opinion his responds was credible. he said women was are always fighting for certain rights but then aspect to be taken out to dinner, so I make it fair and play a game for the check.     

Erin Andrews Is The Victim, Not The Benefiter

Erin Andrews, of Fox Sports, is suing Michael Barrett for $75 million in damages because he filmed her naked in her hotel room and then put the video online. This video received 16.8 million views. Michael Barrett has pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to making such a video. The incident happened in 2009 when Barrett, Andrews’ stalker, requested a hotel room next to hers. Barrett was able to create a peephole between the walls and filmed her.

Erin Andrews testified on Monday in court about how belittling and mortifying this whole thing has been. She believes that this video discredits her professionally and makes her a less valid newscaster. In her opinion, it has hurt her credibility and has hurt her career. She also mentions the emotional and psychological toll that this has had. Andrews mentions that this will haunt her forever.

On Tuesday the defense came back and suggested that the video has actually helped her career, “You have thrived in your career since 2009… Your income has gone up substantially since this occurred”.  Statements like this go back to stereotypes about women. It suggests that her talent and value comes from her looks and her body, not her talent, intelligence or work ethic. Comments like this one insinuates that Andrews is where she is today because of the naked video that was posted. Which means that people liked what they saw and hired her based on her looks. Not only is this reaffirming stereotypes about women and where their value lies, but it is also reaffirming ideas about the male gaze. This idea that women are objects to be seen by the male viewer, nothing more. I think the defense is being sexist and misogynistic by making claims that this video helped her.

It's on Us at the Oscars

This year specifically, the Oscars was a platform to discuss issues and promote social change. Chris Rock, for the most part, did a good job at pointing out the flaws when it comes to diversity in the industry. Race, appropriately, was a big part of the talk at the Oscars.

Another important part was Lady Gaga's performance of "Till It Happens to You", and Vice President Joe Biden's speech beforehand. Sexual assault is somewhat of a taboo subject, and using the Oscars as a platform to discuss issues such as sexual assault is important. Millions of people tune into the Oscars, and the Oscars is a place where messages that are outside the dominant norm of media messages. This allows those who are absent to be seen, like sexual assault survivors. The Oscar performance and speech spread the message that survivors are strong, and that it is not their fault. It was an important message to spread and the Oscars allowed it to be spread to millions. 

Chris Rock's Professional Performance

So I stayed true to my word, and I watched the Academy Awards this past Sunday on ABC. However, I only watched to see how Chris Rock was going handle hosting the Oscar's knowing the current media circumstances. And he came out the gate firing! He wasted no time to address the issues that have been on the minds of everyone in the audience and the many viewers that were tuned in. Many people questioned why he would remain the host and not boycott the Oscar's like a lot of black celebrities. But one thing we must realize is that the award show was going to happen regardless, with or without him. In my opinion, he did a great job of being funny and entertaining while still pushing the message that the Academy Awards need to diversify themselves as it relates to the people they nominate for these prestigious awards. I really appreciated the skit that they put together about if African Americans were in the films that were nominated for picture of the year. The skits included Tracy Morgan in "The Danish Girl," and Whoopi Goldberg playing a janitor in "Joy." I thought this skit was significant because again it addressed the issue that was on everyone's mind, but made it less awkward through comedy. Chris Rock was a great host for the Oscar's, and did everything right in my opinion, until he brought Stacey Dash on stage. However, that is a different story for another day. So well done Chris Rock, and Academy Awards for taking the initiative to address the problem in a professional manner.

Sam Smith Oscar Speech

Some are claiming that Sam Smith made a mistake in his Oscar speech on Sunday when he claimed he was the first openly gay person to win an Oscar. However, when he claimed this, he said he had heard it somewhere and made it very clear that he was not sure if it was true, and even if it wasn't, made it an opportunity to praise the LGBTQ community. 

Some people are taking it hard, especially the open-gay people who have previously won Oscars. They are saying he should have fact checked before he would make a statement. 

I, however, think it was an honest mistake. Even celebrities are not perfect beings, musicians feel slightly out of place at the Oscars, and not everyone has the time  to fact check before their speech, especially if the idea came on the spot. He made it very clear that he was not sure if it was true, and still used it as a platform to motivate and show that anyone in the LGBTQ community can achieve anything. The Oscars give people the chance to use a huge platform to let their voices be heard, and he did this and provided a positive message that was then distributed across many media platforms. The power of cultivation shows that the message he gave could influence many. 

Behind the Scenes for The Bachelor

I found this article scrolling through my Facebook timeline. This is a list of things that most viewers of The Bachelor didn't know about the show. Not surprisingly, most of the facts are about the producers framing the show to make it seem crazier than it really is. The producers have so much power that they literally do whatever they want with the contestants, and even the Bachelor himself! I would have been a lot more surprised, but after all the work we have done with reality television shows, I am not the slightest shocked. This list is actually kind of crazy to think just how much power the producers have.
